Eliminate Fleas With Beneficial Nematodes

Eliminate Fleas With Beneficial Nematodes

Beneficial nematodes can wipe out flea populations completely. I had an infestation of fleas on my property that was eliminated by beneficial nematodes. These nematodes eat flea eggs and larva, ending the lifecycle before they grow to maturity.

Beneficial nematodes or roundworms inhabit a broad range of environments. Nematodes have successfully adapted to nearly every ecosystem: from water (fresh and salt) to soils, from the polar regions to the tropics, as well as the highest to the lowest of elevations.

They often outnumber other animals in both individual and species counts. Their populations often exceed a million individuals per square meter and account for about 80% of all individual animals on earth.

What Are Nematodes?

Nematodes are small, slender worms. The smallest nematodes are microscopic, while some parasitic species can reach over 3 feet in length. Thankfully, the nematodes that feast on fleas are microscopic.

Often referred to as roundworms, nematodes are not closely related to true worms. They are multicellular insects with smooth, unsegmented bodies. The nematode species that feed on plants are so tiny that you need a microscope to see them.

Some nematodes feed on the outer surfaces or tissues of plants. Some species can damage plant roots, stems, foliage, and flowers. If nematodes are feeding on the roots, a plant may look yellowed, wilted, or stunted.

Beneficial nematodes that enrich the soil feed on the decaying material, insects, or other nematodes. These are the nematodes we’re talking about today.

Are Nematodes Dangerous?

Depending on the species, a nematode may be beneficial or detrimental.

While most of the thousands of nematode species on Earth are not harmful, some cause diseases in humans and other animals or attack and feed on living plants.

The nematodes that feast on fleas however, are completely harmless to humans, animals and plants.

Beneficial Nematodes Vs Chemical Sprays

Beneficial nematodes are an all-natural alternative to chemical pesticides. Nematodes actively hunt down and kill pest insects. They are non-toxic, environmentally friendly and completely safe for people, pets, livestock and plants.

There are also many other reasons to use beneficial nematodes. Pest insects can build up a resistance to conventional chemical pesticides, meaning stronger and harsher treatments are eventually needed.

Nematodes target many common insect pests, but are completely harmless to many beneficials like ladybugs, praying mantises, earthworms and bees.

Beneficial nematodes also last longer than chemical pesticides. Beneficial nematodes generally live at levels high enough to control pest insect populations for around 18 months after application, depending on conditions. This means that you can go much longer between treatments as compared to chemical pesticide alternatives.

How Flea Killing Nematodes Spread

Beneficial nematodes spend their life in the soil. While they can’t move very far under their own power, they can swim freely in water and they move more quickly in moist soil. This is the reason why you need to spray down your yard with water before and after applying nematodes. It’s also recommended that you spray your yard down the day after application as well.

In addition, nematodes require moist, humid conditions and fairly warm soil to do their job well. Applying them during the spring and summer are ideal.

Quality Is Key

“It is imperative you buy nematodes from a reputable source.” says BioLogic.

“Beneficial nematodes are only effective when the nematodes are living and healthy and used in high enough quantities to control the pest population. Many suppliers are actually re-sellers of nematodes, meaning they do not produce the product you are purchasing. Buying from a re-seller could mean you are purchasing nematodes that have spent too much time in shipment or storage, resulting in many fewer living nematodes than you paid for. BioLogic is a nematode producer, not a reseller, and our application rates are based on our own research, or the research of reputable institutions. We do not exaggerate application rates because we want to ensure you get effective pest control with our products and because when applying at the proper application levels you should not need to reapply very often. We take care to package and ship our nematodes in a manner that ensures you receive healthy, active nematodes. BioLogic has been in business since 1985, long before most people had heard or thought about going green.  We have been able to stay in business and grow by delivering a good product that works! You can trust us to deliver an effective product that does what we say it will.”

What To Buy

When purchasing and applying nematodes to your yard for flea control it is very important that you buy the right species because different kinds of nematodes are effective against different pests.
